Big Lots, Inc. is the one of the nation’s largest broad line closeout retailers. When a manufacturer has excess products due to overruns, packaging changes or discontinued items, Big Lots buys these items at a discount directly from that manufacturer. This allows the firm to provide name brand products at prices below traditional discount retailers. Big Lots supplements its closeout merchandise with everyday items sourced directly from domestic and international suppliers. The company purchases approximately 26% of its merchandise from overseas, with 23% coming from vendors within China. The company sells its merchandise under six categories: consumables; home; furniture; play ‘n wear; seasonal and hardline & others. Consumables include the food, health and beauty, plastics, papers, chemical and pet departments. The home category includes domestics, stationery and home decor products. Furniture products include upholstery, mattresses, ready-to-assemble products and case goods such as bedroom, dining room and living room furniture. Play ‘n wear includes electronics, toys, jewelry, infant accessories and home decorations. The seasonal category includes lawn and garden, Christmas, summer and other holiday goods. Hardlines & Other includes electronics, appliances, tools and home maintenance merchandise. Big Lots operates 1,398 stores in 48 states, averaging approximately 30,169 square feet in size. Additionally, the firm operates a wholesale division, Big Lots Wholesale, which offers business-to-business sales. Its Canadian stores, which Big Lots bought in 2011, operate under the name of LW, although some remain as Liquidation World.
